Welcome to For Josephine’s Mystic Highlight! Every other week, I want to introduce y’all to a mystic who happened to catch my attention! And if y’all know of any… please let me know. Today, we are focusing on popular TikToker, @moonruledmami! If you don’t know, now you know… I am heavy into astrology! TikTok is one of my favorite places to go if I want some quick information about a placement of mine. But my favorite person to watch is Grace! Compared to other TikTokers, I find her to be humorous, brutally honest, fun, and spicy! And naturally, I trust her more because she’s a nigga just like me LMAOOO! I’m like hmmmm… for this series, I HAVE to highlight her, amongst other Black astrologers.
With this series, I aim to give us a little inside look into the lives of Black mystics in hopes that maybe you can take something away from their practice/belief system. I want to humanize Black people who are very much so into the unknown, rather than demonize, villainize, or paint them as ‘delusional.’ So, let’s say hi to Grace, y’all!
Kamory: What prompted you to get into astrology? Was there a special connection that made you explore it? Were you curious? Or did you grow up around it?
Grace: I’ve always had an interest. I don’t remember exactly when I got into it, but even dating back to high school I would wake up every morning and check my horoscope. I’m a bookworm, I love learning and reading. I remember diving into my chart and starting to download the apps my freshman year of college, in 2016/17. My senior year in 2021, I was reading an astrology book and it made me feel so seen! I had a lot of questions about myself and my life, and reading the book made me feel not so crazy. I felt understood for once. It broke down the placements and what that could mean about me and my life, and I hopped off the porch and went straight into practicing. The fact that astrology works (and it really shouldn’t) was so fascinating to me. Like what do you mean the planets and positions of them and their movements can translate to me in real time! And tell me about my life?? I wanted in and I had to keep learning more so I started practicing with the charts of my friends’ and social media followers. Being that I’m nerdy and love learning, I really got into it from the standpoint that I can continue to study and learn about astrology for the rest of my life and still not know everything. It was so fascinating to me. No one around me was doing astrology or into it at all and it wasn’t something that I really knew a lot about growing up outside of the typical sun sign horoscopes.
K: Did you receive a lot of pushback from your family or friends because of your interest in astrology?
G: I actually never received pushback from anyone. My friends sometimes make fun of me for how seriously I take it or how I can make everything about astrology but I don’t mind it, I know it’s all love. My family was very receptive actually, growing up in a Black Christian household, I didn’t expect it tbh. They know all about it, and even ask for readings and advice. They think it’s cool, honestly. Astrology aside, I even told them I was a witch and they said it was cool as long as I was a “good witch” lol. My family is great!
K: When you are doing readings, are you considering other factors like race, class, sexuality, and gender when giving advice?
G: Yes and no. It depends on what information I have about the client or if I can even see them. I offer zoom calls and recorded readings on my website. So if we’re on a Zoom call, and I can see someone’s appearance I can factor that into what I’m saying. I can ask clarifying questions and get a better feel for the person, so then yes I can factor in those things. But if it’s a recorded reading, all I have is the details the customer typed in a message. I’ve thought about creating a detailed survey that clients have to fill out with all of the above details so I can have insight, but if someone is just asking a basic question all of that isn’t necessary. That being said, it also depends on what someone is asking or where the conversation goes. If we’re talking about love or finding a partner, of course someone’s sexuality is probably factored into that. But I don’t necessarily need to think about your race or class if we're doing a reading focused on the relationship you have with your mother.
K: What’s the hardest part about being an astrologer?
G: I do not do astrology in the typical way. So sometimes I get pushback from other people, or it gets confusing trying to re-explain things to people that other people have explained incorrectly. I use a traditional and a whole sign approach to astrology. The original purpose of astrology was not to tell you about yourself or your personality, but to tell you about your life and the circumstances and the things that can happen to you. That is how I personally use astrology. A lot of stuff from modern/popular astrology has no true backing, and if you actually learn, research and look further into tradition, you'll see that a lot of that stuff is incorrect. So a big part of what I'm doing is re-teaching people things, which can be difficult a lot of time. Also just being an astrologer is not an easy job. A lot of times when I tell somebody I'm astrologer, hey look at me like I have three fucking heads or they wanna get into the pop astrology bs which just irritates me as a whole. I wish astrology was taken more seriously, and that people understood it better! I know some people think that I’m a joke and they don’t take what I do seriously, which definitely annoys me. I hate explaining what I do to people. There’s always so many questions. The common person doesn’t understand the true depths of astrology and I love explaining it of course, but I don’t necessarily wanna have to give a lecture and explain myself every time I say what I do for a living!
K: I kinda have this theory that people (especially Black people) don’t take it seriously because we live in a culture that’s super based on logic and the tangible. But I’ve deadass looked at the birth charts of some of my family members and friends and I see how accurate that shit is, LMAOO. Even as a Hoodoo practitioner, I’ve utilized astrology in my rootwork and spells to help me manifest certain things and it WORKS! Our ancestors always used the cosmos to understand themselves and the world around them. But have you ever doubted astrology at any point in your life because of how much Western culture emphasizes what we can see?
G: I agree. A lot of people can’t fathom the fact that the planets have an effect on our lives, which is all astrology is. I’ve never doubted astrology once I saw how well it works lol. It shouldn’t work but it does and I find myself amazed literally everyday.
K: What are some popular astrology takes that you feel lack a sense of diversity and inclusion?
G: I can’t think of any specific takes off the top of my head, but truthfully I would say that the field of astrology as a whole lacks a lot of diversity and inclusion. When you think of astrology, you think of “woo woo white women” and that’s no shade. Astrology is a very white industry period, and interestingly enough, dominated by men. It’s a common misconception that astrology is something that’s feminine, because most of the scholars and writers and popular teachers are men. (A LOT of white men). The tides are changing though, but still astrology has only recently become something that’s looked at as “feminine” and women are now having their voices heard. But still, it’s hard to find Black astrologers. Most of the books and published works are by whites, even in my own personal library of hundreds of astrology books (physical and digital copies), I only can think of two titles by Blacks, and these books are both extremely recent (coming out in 2023). When I’m learning and studying astrology materials, most of the time it isn’t coming from people like me. This is a part of the reason why I go so hard, because I want to make astrology accessible for EVERYONE. And I want people of color, especially my Black people, to see a familiar face when seeking astrology info and services.
K: How has astrology changed your life as a Black woman?
G: None of this relates to my race, but astrology has changed my life significantly! It’s changed the way that I think about myself, it gave me complete understanding. I had so many questions about myself and my life that I was finally able to answer once I got an understanding of astrology. It made me feel seen and heard, and truthfully like I wasn’t crazy or weird. Astrology is the study of how the planets affect you personally, and it’s truly amazing to see how the transits always play out with what exactly is happening for me. It’s such a valuable tool, since your chart basically is the road map to your life. Even with me loving astrology so much that I’ve decided to dedicate my life to it and turn it into a career. The fact that I can use such a divine tool as a way to help, and therefore change other people’s lives is so amazing and powerful to me. Me using it to help others has changed my life from that standpoint as well. Most of my clients are Black women just like myself, so it’s amazing to be connected with my sisters and give them something of value that can be so instrumental.
K: What’s your biggest ick about some astrologers/the subject of astrology?
G: I feel like a lot of people have an interest in astrology and they take stuff and run with it. Like they just read a few books or do some online research and start calling themselves an astrologer with no real study or work done. And they spew a bunch of incorrect stuff online that confuses people and then I have to correct it for my clients and followers. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve had to re-explain things to people, or talk down some of their fears because another astrologer has scared them or said something crazy.
I hate almost everything about modern and popular astrology. The placidus house system, ABC houses, the psychological analysis that people use astrology for. Don’t get me wrong, astrology can tell you about yourself and your personality, but that’s not ALL or WHAT it should be used for.
When ppl say that they’re intuitive astrologers. Astrology is not an intuitive practice. Astrology is a tradition, it has rules, and things mean things. A lot of people make up a lot of their own delineations for placements and aspects and things astrology related, and that’s just not how it works!!!
K: Do you base your dating life based on your synastry with someone?
G: No but I probably should LMAO! I always look of course. With dating, as soon as I say I’m an astrologer, people are so thirsty to give me their birth details so I can read them and or tell them how compatible we are. I’ve had terrible synastry with people and still dated them anyway because I don’t like to let astrology dictate my life. And I don’t like to psychoanalyze people solely on their charts. But that shit is real and it always plays out exactly how the synastry says it will, so maybe I should start! I hate doing synastry readings, so doing it for myself just irritates me too but it truly is important. What I do like to do is make an inception chart. Which is a chart for the moment that you start or do something. So I look at the inception chart of when I meet somebody in person or for our first date and I can use that to see what the vibes of the relationship will be too. That’s more chill to me than doing a whole synastry or composite reading with myself and someone else. The last few ppl I’ve dated I never really even looked too deep into their charts though outside of a quick glance. I just wanna vibe tbh.
K: I joke a lot and say I won’t date certain signs anymore because of the experiences I have with them, but to be honest, I’m the same way (unless it’s 12th House Synastry LMAOOO). I don’t let astrology rule my life because I believe that is how you go into a psychosis. Did you ever experience a spiritual psychosis when you first started getting into astrology?
G: No, I’m a very practical and realistic person at the end of the day. A lot of people take a lot of things too far when it comes to astrology and I think they’re insane lmaoo
K: So, what’s next for you as far as your platform/business?
G: Growing my patreon! I want to build more of a community there so if you’re reading this pls subscribe lol. There are benefits without paying, but paid members get one complimentary mini reading a month. I also just reached 1k subscribers on youtube so I’m trying to work on posting more there and monetizing my platform. In 2025 I want to launch astrological digital products and start hosting events as well so stay tuned for that!
